Questions
Hello Core Project! I'm very curious about your favourite band or singer....What music are you listening to recently??? Best wishes, Kirk!
DAN JONES: "I suppose you could split it into two categories; music that we're influenced by, and the music we listen to for our own pleasure, which are two very different things sometimes!
Pawel listens to all the classic metal bands, which probably comes out in his drumming; Slayer, Metallica (before they went pants), Opeth, Maiden, Dream Theater and Tool and all those bands are always on Pawel's playlists. He also listens to an Australian metal band called Karnivool, and when he was back in Oz he was offered the chance to audition with them but luckily for us he declined! Check out Karnivool - you might not have heared of them but they're very cool, and worth a listen.
Nick is a bit of a 'genre whore' as he puts it and listens to just about everything, although being a bassist he does have a natural tendency towards the funkier end of the spectrum! His favourite bands are Rage Against The Machine and a British band called Senser, who were around before RATM and are a more electronic, DJ-orientated soundalike of RATM. He also enjoys lots of groove-orientated metal such as Pantera, Soundgarden, Snot and Tool.
Darryl is a bit of an odd one when it comes to his musical tastes. Being a virtuoso guitarist he is influenced by the usual suspects like John Petrucci, Paul Gilbert, Steve Vai but also Frank Gambale, Tommy Emmanuelle (if you haven't heard of Tommy Emmanuelle check out his guitar boogie on Youtube - it'll blow you away) and Michael Angelo Batio. He was taught by Shaun Baxter, a famous English jazz-metal guitarist, and has been influenced by much of Baxter's playing. However, Darryl also enjoys kitsch 1980s pop music, especially cheesy theme tunes to films such as Dirty Dancing, Fame and Mannequin. To be honest I can't exactly explain why this is but he genuinely loves it and knows a lot about it....
Being a totally crazy-in-love keyboardist, the people AK has much love and respect for are: Keith Emerson, Rick Wakeman, Jethro Tull, Yes, Vangelis and of course Jordan Rudess. However, he also is influenced by Tori Amos, Judas Priest, Avatar and Puiu Pasco.
As for me, my favourite bands/artists of all time are probably (in no particular order) Queen, Jamiroquai, Iron Maiden, The Beatles, Tool, Led Zeppelin, David Bowie, Steve Wonder, Frank Zappa. Other notables are Electric Light Orchestra, Prince and The Eagles, and many more too numerous to mention. I love all great music!!!! I also love Strapping Young Lad and generally anything that Devin Townsend does, and I firmly believe that Monster Magnet's God Says No is one of the greatest albums of all time. If you don't have it, you are missing out. I'm influenced mainly by Tool, Dream Theater and David Bowie lyrically (and I also read English Literature at uni so that helps) and as a singer Freddie Mercury (the greatest frontman+singer for all of time), Bruce Dickinson, Glenn Hughes (absolutely awesome, check him out), Geoff Tate and Stephen Tyler are the people I look up to and try to emulate."
